TRES PASOS
2020 col HDV 5’ 00’’
regia/concept: Antonello Matarazzo
musica: Rocco De Rosa

I found it very interesting how the film seemed to have an objective sense of distance with the people appearing in it. Would you please tell us why you decided to make a dance film about migration? Was there any personal experience that inspired you?
Actually, the tango is, more than any other, the popular dance that is most affected by cultural contaminations of all kinds. If you think about it, you can realize that there is no people in the world who do not carry within themselves the genes of millennia of transformations produced by commercial exchanges, by wars, conquests, migrations and crossings between different ethnic groups. In my opinion, tangueros’ attitude, as well as music, show evidence of those roots.
This is the reason why tango seemed to me the most appropriate metaphor to talk about the ineluctable and unstoppable phenomenon which migration is. What’s more, “tango” stands for “nostalgia”, reminding the ancient greek theme of returnig home by sea.
Looking up the dictionary I found out the title Tres Pasos means “Three steps ahead” in Spanish. Is it about the steps done by the dancer in the film? What message does this title have?
The title is borrowed from the original piece of music by Rocco De Rosa, they are three steps of an imaginary dance that in the film sound like “passage” or “breakthrough” – three decisive steps that make you cross a border or definitely change your life. I mean, it is as if space were transformed into time: on the one hand there is the past to which you hardly want to come back and on the other what the future is expected to be. The step ahead deals with illusion, shipwreck, failure or dreams that will come true. It deals with the unknown we are made of.

DOLOREM IPSUM
2021 col HDV 3’ 15’’
video/concept: Antonello Matarazzo
soundtrack: Rocco De Rosa

Siamo polvere e ombra, dice Orazio.
Living is a perennial farewell. Pain often duplicates itself and time is a bittersweet poison that irreparably escapes and becomes smoke.
We are but dust and shadow, says Horace. But in the life that burns and wears out, we inhabit the wonder of the flame. We are, in endless moments, the light.
