Émeric Lhuisset
Ukraine – A Hundred Hidden Faces
Galerie Gilles Drouault, Parigi
Opening June 25th from 4pm to 9pm
26 June – 23 July 2022
Discover the project Emeric Lhuisset realized in Ukraine in March 2022 alongside the Ukrainian civil resistance.
In 2014, Émeric Lhuisset portrayed 100 residents of Kyiv in the square as a tribute to the more than 100 people who died in the fighting with Yanukovych’s troops on Maydan. They all answered two questions:
– What do you hope will happen next?
– What do you think will happen?
Eight years later, their answers are still just as moving and confrontational.
In March 2022, Émeric Lhuisset returned to Ukraine. His aim was to make another hundred portraits, this time of resistance fighters throughout Ukraine.
Here what he says:
“Some of these people have taken up arms, others manufacture camouflage nets or Molotov cocktails, still others help out with logistics, or care for the wounded… They are the Ukrainian civil resistance, people who have left their ordinary lives in order to fight.
They figure in these images with their hopes, their fears… their faces remain invisible… for the moment at least, to protect them.
But one day, their faces will be visible to all, I photographed these faces for the future. Their faces will appear on the day Ukraine will regain its sovereignty.
On that day the resistance will have won.
Just like eight years ago, during Euromaidan, I asked each of these hundred people two questions:
– What would you like to see happening now?
– What do you think will happen?”
Émeric Lhuisset (France, 1983) graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Ecole Normale Supérieure Ulm – Centre de géostratégie / Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. In parallel to his artistic practice, he teaches contemporary art and geopolitics at Sciences Po.
Exhibited and collected in many museums, Lhuisset has won various awards, including the British Journal of Photography International Photography Award 2020, the BMW Residency for Photography 2018, and the Grand Prix Images Vevey – Leica Prize 2017.
He is the author of four books. His portraits of Ukrainian resistance fighters are published in 2022 by André Frère Editions and Paradox (Ydoc) and follow the book Maydan – Hundred portraits, released by the same publishers in 2014.
The book is finally ready and available for pre-order (signed copies) before its launch in July at the Rencontres d’Arles.
